How To Play Blues Guitar

How to play blues guitar is group of several free blues lessons. Get some new ideas to spice up your playing! There's a table of contents further down the page. It points to all the blues lessons. Most of them are in depth written tutorials and include a guitar lesson video.

Blues music is many things to many people. From electric sounds such as those found in the style of B.B King or Buddy Guy, to rock blues such as the music played by Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughan. There's also sophisticated and modern expressions like some of the "jazzier" stuff played by Robben Ford or John Scofield. And then there's the acoustic fingerstyle folk blues.

I could go on! There's the jazz version (Wes Montgomery, George Benson), slide guitar extravaganzas and more. The blues flavor has also influenced the shaping and sounds of rock n roll music and most American music in general. It's powerful stuff! Even Gershwin composed blues tunes (Summertime).

In this how to play blues guitar series I'm going to cover all the fundamentals of electric blues. That's what I know and love. These concepts will be able to be "stylized" to suit your own particular needs.

Each of the blues lessons listed below will have a "Further Reading and Study" section at the bottom of the page. These will be links to other relevant guitar lessons from the site. Most of the lesson are inter-related and connected by common ideas and fundamental skills.

Some of the lessons such as the blues guitar scale will be more of an introductory level blues guitar lesson. Don't let your "pride" get in the way. Whatever you need to learn or get a stronger grip on, do it. Be honest with yourself and make sure you don't have too many weak links in the chain.

This is one of the best ways to learn blues guitar -- absorb the blues flavour. Get out and see a live performance in your town if possible. That's a powerful adjunct to blues guitar lessons. It's much more than a 12 bar formula and the blues scale! There are some top notch performers out there who really know how to play blues guitar!
